What is Aboriginal Housing Society about

Supporting Indigenous individuals by providing below-market rental housing and educational opportunities to help them transition toward home ownership and long-term housing stability.

Who is Aboriginal Housing Society?

When Aboriginal Housing Society was incorporated the objectives were recorded as follows:

  1. To acquire lands, by purchase or otherwise, erect or otherwise provide a building or buildings for social and community purposes.
  2. To provide a meeting place for the consideration and discussion of questions affecting the interests of the community.
  3. To provide all necessary equipment and furniture for carrying on its various objectives.
  4. To sell, manage, lease, mortgage, depose of, or otherwise deal with the property of the society.
  5. To eradicate aboriginal homelessness in our urban environments, being the City of Lethbridge and surrounding off-reserve towns, by:
    a. Provide opportunities for urban indigenous people with housing needs.
    b. Remove barriers faced by indigenous people living in urban environments.
  6. To provide programming that helps individuals gain independence and sustain personal growth.

Aboriginal Housing Society (AHS) was incorporated under the Alberta Societies Act on December 8, 2005. At its inception, AHS created a Mission Statement and Vision Statement to focus its future in the community.

  • To seek to remove barriers faced by Aboriginals living in urban environments.
  • To facilitate acquisition of necessary resources that will help individuals gain independence and sustain personal growth.

To provide opportunities for Indigenous people with housing needs and enable them to acquire the necessary resources that allow individuals and families to gain independence and sustain personal growth.
